Editing Bumper Music on a Video
In Video Editing an Interview or 'Talking Head' program: When editing bumper music into a program, there are two primary methods to bring the bumper music in when going to a break: 1. Fade up, and 2. Full blast. Either method is effective in drawing your audiences attention into the next segment, promo, or commercial. But they must be done correctly, or they distract from, rather than adding to the quality of the program. 1. The Fade Up This is especially effective if it appears obvious that the speaker is wrapping up his segment. To accomplish this, you can start to fade in the bumper music about 15 to 45 seconds before the speaker actually finishes talking. You must not 'step on' the speaker -- or turn the music up so loud that the speakers words cannot be clearly heard above the music. The first 3-5 seconds should be faded up from inaudible to about 7-12 db BELOW the voice audio level, depending on the style of the bumper music. Then at the moment that the last syllable is spoken, over a one second time frame, raise the music volume to be slightly above that of the spoken voice, and continue through the bumper. If there is applause after the speaking, let it continue underneath the bumper music, and fade it out after several seconds. But if there are any addition voices in the audio track after the volume raises, they must be eliminated. 2. The Full Blast This is like putting an exclamation point at the end of a speech, or for a dramatic, exciting transition. The music could start with a trumpet blast, a flurry of drums, screaming guitar, or other strong instrumentation. For this one, start the bumper music immediately after the last syllable fades. The volume should be at least as strong as the voice and possibly slightly stronger. Again, if there is applause after the speaking, let it continue underneath the bumper music, and fade it out after several seconds.
